Show us your collection: #6 Nintendo Legion

NeoGeo AES

Another collection for your viewing pleasure this week and we are back where we started for this collection from Australia. Another ‘Twitter friend’ (@Nintendo_Legion) with obvious leanings towards a certain console and games manufacturer. At the moment we couldn’t source any pics of his software collection but they will be added as soon as we can.

Q and A with Nintendo Legion

When did you become interested in video games and what was the first video game you played?

Nintendo Legion: I became keen on video games in the mid 80’s (might have been 1985 or 86, my memory isn’t quite concise on this one) when I went over to a mates place and we played his Colecovision. I was hooked and begged my parents to get me one. Again, I am unsure of this, but I think Donkey Kong was the first game I played.

What was the first games console or computer you owned and how old were you?

Nintendo Legion: I got a C64 in 1987 (I was 11), but then all my friends got Master Systems and/or NES’s, so, I begged and begged and got a NES to go with my C64. I was in kiddie heaven. I recall only getting a few NES carts per year (birthday/Xmas), as they were so expensive. The C64 tapes on the other hand were way cheaper (but a nightmare to load / wait / play)

What got you into collecting videogames, computers and consoles?

Nintendo Legion: It was a natural progression for me. I pretty much stuck with Nintendo from the late 80’s through to today. I got into every generational console. I have dabbled with other systems, and I do appreciate (possibly love) other makes/models too (Sega anyone !! Sega was awesome). Like most people, every day life takes up your time and at one stage, my love of video gaming waned. However, I got onto twitter and found a thriving community and I am now even more in-love with the retro gaming movement. I would say that my fellow Aussie mate, ausretrogamer had a big part to play in that.

Where do you source most of your retro purchases from (ebay, flea markets etc) ?

Nintendo Legion: I source the bulk of my gear from Flea markets, salvation army stores and garage sales. I only dabble on eBay if I really really want something and I can not find it anywhere

What is your most prized retrogaming possession and how much did it cost you?

Nintendo Legion: The NES is my most prized possesion. I have had it since new and it is like part of the family. It was $200 back in the day, but the amount of joy i have had from it, you couldn’t put a price on it.

What is your favourite console or computer?

Nintendo Legion: Haha, the NES, by far (console) and the C64 (computer)

Where do you want to go now with the collection?

Nintendo Legion: I would like to get a few more CIB games, but funding such a venture (at this point in time) is a tough gig. I am digging this PC-Engine revival I keep on seeing on twitter, which is great to see, so, I am searching for one (I might have to hit eBay for one). I don’t plan too far ahead, as I know it could lead to disappointment. Therefore, it is steady as she goes with the collecting.

Have you any tips for budding retro games collectors?

Nintendo Legion: Don’t be hard on yourself if you missout on a deal. Just be mindful that these things happen. Use as many references to research what you want before making a decision. I find twitter very useful for stuff I should get or avoid. Also, don’t be afraid to ask people, there is never a dumb question (I ask them all the time haha). Most of all, enjoy your games, don’t be focussed too much on how many you have — it is about the quality, not quantity ;->
