Q and A with Steve Bauman
When did you become interested in video games and what was the first video game you played?
Steve: I really didn’t get into gaming until the early 90s playing FFVII on the PS1, but the first game I remember playing was Pong in 1978 my uncle John brought one home.
What was the first games console or computer you owned and how old were you?
Steve: My aunt and uncle gave me a colecovision in 1983 for Christmas, I was 10.
What got you into collecting videogames, computers and consoles?
Steve: I worked at a game store from 05 to 08 that sold retro games as well as new stuff so I started buying NES and it just went from there. I had over 2000 games at the time and decided to take them into the store to help the store make some money. I kick myself for that but I’m back up over 1600, again my son Sean who is 19 is a big help in this collection.
Where do you source most of your retro purchases from (ebay, flea markets etc) ?
Steve: I’m a big believer in yard sales most people just want to sell their stuff cheap I budget myself. In the summer if I have only 18 bucks in my pocket and spend it at the first sale I’m done I also like thrift stores I stay away from eBay. I believe everything is way overpriced you have to look at the times, things are tight everywhere so finding someone to spend that money can be tough I always look for the best deal.
What is your most prized retrogaming possession and how much did it cost you?
Steve: Now I is my colecovision with some of the modules and games I got all this for free. But before I got rid of my last collection I had a Atari Jaguar in box with every game in boxes mint collection.
What is your favourite hardware manufacturer (Sega, Nintendo, Atari Commodore etc.) ?
Steve: Have to say Atari have about 150 Atari 2600/7800 games its the one system I play a lot as a kid, my best friend had one.
What is your favourite console or computer?
Steve: Retro has to be the Atari 5200 just like the way it looks. As for current I’m always on my 360.
Where do you want to go now with the collection?
Steve: As far as I can.
Have you any tips for budding retro games collectors?
Steve: Go for the bargain. I find knowing people that collect helps out do some trading.
Q and A with Sean Bauman
When did you become interested in video games and what was the first video game you played?
Sean: I first got into games pretty much since I was about 4. First game was probably Mario on the Super Nintendo, first game I asked for was 1080 on the Nintendo 64.
What was the first games console or computer you owned and how old were you?
Sean: First console was my parents and it was the Super Nintendo, I was about 4.
What got you into collecting videogames, computers and consoles?
Sean: My dad got me into collecting pretty much following in his footsteps with it.
Where do you source most of your retro purchases from (ebay, flea markets etc) ?
Sean: Mostly flea markets or a store nearby called the Toy Vault.
What is your most prized retrogaming possession and how much did it cost you?
Sean: Most prized, not too retro but Sonic Adventure 2 birthday pack Japanese version for the Sega Dreamcast.
What is your favourite hardware manufacturer (Sega, Nintendo, Atari Commodore etc.) ?
Sean: My favorite by far is Sega.
What is your favourite console or computer?
Sean: I have two one is my Xbox 360 and my other is Sega Dreamcast.
Where do you want to go now with the collection?
Sean: I want to go as far as I can with it, carry on the family collecting. Possibly get full collections for some systems would be pretty neat.
Have you any tips for budding retro games collectors?
Sean: As in tips, I mean go for the deals see what sales are going on at some stores. Find the cheap stuff at garage sales and flea markets. Working at a game store helps with the new stuff as well! Haha.
