Q and A with Stuart Clough

When did you become interested in video games and what was the first video game you played?

Stuart: When I was 4 or 5, me and my older brother would go to my cousin’s house where he would be playing ‘BoulderDash’ on his  ZX spectrum. He would let me have the occasional go but being the youngest, my participation was usually minimal.

What was the first games console or computer you owned and how old were you?

Stuart: When I was 6 my parents bought us a ZX Spectrum +2, which was the model that had a built in cassette deck. I loved (and still love) that machine.

What got you into collecting videogames, computers and consoles?

Stuart: I became really disillusioned with gaming for the PS3 & never really found a game that hooked me. After my son was born, I became nostalgic for the ‘good old days’ of gaming. So I unpacked my Master System & started building a collection.

Where do you source most of your retro purchases from (ebay, flea markets, yard sales etc) ?

Stuart: Car boot sales and charity shops are very hit or miss, but I’ve found some really good stuff in them. I reckon that eBay and Gumtree has supplied the majority for me.

What is your most prized retrogaming possession and how much did it cost you?

Stuart: On a purely sentimental note it’d have to be my Atari 2600. My Nan bought it in the late 70’s and let me keep it. It’s fully boxed & in mint condition. Also, cost me nothing.

What is your favourite hardware manufacturer (Sega, Nintendo, Atari Commodore etc.) ?

Stuart: The head says Sega but the heart says Sinclair. So I’m picking both and you can’t stop me!

What is your favourite console or computer?

Stuart: A really tough one. But the Sega Master System just barely gets it for me.

The burning house scenario: which collection would you save first?

Stuart: I’d probably just be standing scratching my head and staring at everything until the house collapsed on me.

The Desert Island scenario: which one console and game would you take?

Stuart: The Master System and Golden Axe warrior. It’s probably the game I’ve had most fun completing. Although, it was a toss up between this and ‘How to be a complete bastard’ on the Spectrum.

Where do you want to go now with the collection?

Stuart: I’m after a complete MS collection but it’s getting expensive now. I just like strolling around charity shops & boot sales looking for gems. I’m not going to bankrupt myself on eBay for it.

Have you any tips for budding retro games collectors?

Stuart: Don’t use the ‘buy it now’ option on eBay. Just be patient with an auction & you’ll usually get it for a lot cheaper. Also, check Amazon. You might be surprised what’s there.
