April 4, 2013 – Orange County, CA (PR) In this day and age of crowd funding retro video games and mobile gaming devices, the team of the popular RetroGamingRoundup.com podcast decided to go it alone with a team of talented programmers and graphic artists who were fans of their podcast and set out to create a brand new, original game for a 36 year old gaming console, the Atari 2600.
The game titled RetroGamingRoundup Presents: CGE Adventures started development back in July 2012. It is about a real time event that happened to the RetroGamingRoundup podcast team while exhibiting at the 2010 Classic Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. While developing the game they re-created the Classic Gaming Expo in 8-bit form and the player runs through the environment which includes the expo vendor floor, the expo museum, the V.I.P Lounge and even onto the casino floor; all visibly recreated on the archaic yet still very capable Atari 2600.
The game’s title screen portrays the familiar Welcome to Las Vegas sign that greets tourists as they drive into Sin City while Viva Las Vegas plays in the background. Graphical sprites are 8-bit style and include recreations of the podcast hosts, So Cal Mike, UK Mike and Scott (as well as whole cast of other characters) as they chase the player in the game who is out to heist a stack of their podcast promotional CD’s and escape to freedom on the Las Vegas Strip. There is even a “secret” Easter egg hidden in the game, just like in the game that inspired this new adventure; the original Atari 2600 Adventure, which the hosts grew up playing over thirty years ago.
After nine months the game is now available for sale exclusively on GameGavel.com, an auction site dedicated to the rich and wonderful world of video games and gaming memorabilia. Buyers can choose a full-fledged boxed version complete with authentic Atari 2600 cartridge, 12-page color instruction manual as well as some special “feelies” tossed in as an homage to the classic computing days when software companies would include special, tangible game pieces and artifacts within the software box. Or a digitally downloadable “ROM” is available for play on Atari 2600 emulators on modern day computers and some handheld gaming systems.
RetroGamingRoundup is a popular podcast that covers all eras of classic gaming, although there is some debate among the cast on when classic gaming ended and modern day gaming began. Since February 2008 and each and every month thereafter, they produce a single podcast episode that runs from six to eight hours in length and includes a variety of content including in-depth interviews with famous retro gaming gurus from days gone by.
The RetroGamingRoundup team wants to ask you, “Have you played Atari Today?” If you have an Atari 2600 packed away in your attic, you might was well dig it back out and once again have the joy of purchasing a brand new game for it in 2013. According to Mike Kennedy, who goes by So Cal Mike on the podcast, “The Atari and the types of games it plays are timeless. You are never too old to play”.
