Console and controller painting by Sheree Lucas

Using social media has many advantages; but the reason I love social media so much is the fact you meet so many talented and interesting people. One such person is Sheree Lucas who I came across via her Instagram page.

Apart from being an avid retro games collector she has found a way of combining her other more artistic side with that of gaming. The result is some amazing hand painted consoles and controllers which have gotten some well deserved attention amongst the retro gaming community.

For the rest of this article I will let the pictures and Sheree herself do the talking…

RGC: When did you start retrogaming and why?

Sheree: I’ve been gaming since I was 4 years old, as my mum was a big gamer too. She started off with the ZX Spectrum, and over the years she went through the Mega Drive, Playstation 1 + 2 and PSP. So I’ve always been into it. I used to spend my teenage years playing through Final Fantasy 7, and Alundra 2. However it’s only been the past 2 years that I’ve focused on actually collecting for the older consoles. I’m actually attempting a full UK PAL set of PS2 at the moment. I’m 400 games in, so slowly getting there. I decided to start collecting for many reasons. The main ones being nostalgia and also wanting my three young girls to grow up experiencing what I experienced growing up.

RGC: What gave you the inspiration to start painting retro gaming hardware?

Sheree: My brother was actually the one that started me off. He was going to paint and Xbox controller with red paint splatters, but it had sat on my mums kitchen side for ages untouched. So I offered to paint it for him, asked him his favourite older game and set to work. It joins my two favourite things – art and retro games, so I’m happy 🙂

RGC: What is your favourite piece?

Sheree: My favourite piece so far has to be the Legend of Zelda Wind Waker SNES controller I painted as a prize to be given away by RetroCollect at the PlayExpo just gone. The Legend of Zelda is a favourite series of mine and I love the Wind Waker art style. It had Link, Zelda and Navi on the front and Ganon on the back.

RGC: Have you got an artistic background?

Sheree: I suppose I have. I’m always drawing, painting or making something. My mum is artistic too, as was my great grandfather, so I get it from them. If you give me a bunch of craft stuff and ask me to make something, I’ll never be stuck for ideas.

RGC: Are you going to start selling your work on a regular basis? Do you do commissions?

Sheree: Hopefully! I have one for sale at the moment, but it’s not gathering a lot of interest, so I may focus on commissions. I have a few bits and bobs I’ve promised to paint, so once I have those out the way I’ll be open for commissions. It’ll be interesting to see what people ask for!
